Text Atrap Uganda
In November 2021, the AfricaMuseum commissioned me to document their ATRAP project in Uganda.
The project is centered around citizens who help prevent bilharzia, a neglected tropical disease affecting more than 200 million people worldwide, mainly in Africa. They are involved in monitoring freshwater snail populations that spread the disease, and in creating community-led awareness campaigns together with scientists from Uganda and Belgium.
I had the honor to witness gatherings with the scientific participants from the Royal Museum for Central Africa, KULeuven, Mbarara University for Science and Technology, and the citizen scientists from Ndaiga, Kagadi, Kyaterekera, Mpeefu, and Kanara.
Meetings were alternated with door-to-door visits, theatre plays, and football games to raise awareness, while we also visited the abattoirs to check for liver fluke disease, which is also spread through freshwater snails.
